Losing or damaging your vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC) is a stressful experience, but the RTO provides a straightforward procedure to get a duplicate RC under Section 26 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Step 1: File a Police Report (FIR / Lost Report)
Immediately file a lost report or FIR at the nearest police station or online police portal. You must obtain a copy of this report containing the vehicle registration number and chassis number.

Step 2: Obtain RTO Form 26
Form 26 is the application form for a duplicate RC. It must be filled out and signed by the owner. If the vehicle is hypothecated, the bank must sign and stamp the form to grant permission.

Required Documents to Submit:
  • Form 26 (in duplicate if hypothecated)
  • Copy of Police FIR/Lost Report
  • NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) clearance report
  • Valid PUC Certificate copy
  • Valid Insurance copy
  • Chassis number pencil print
  • Address proof of owner
