A vehicle fitness certificate is a document issued by the RTO stating that the vehicle is fit to run on public roads without causing environmental hazards or safety risks. The validity rules differ significantly between private (non-transport) and commercial (transport) vehicles.

Private Vehicles (Cars & Bikes):
For private vehicles, the registration certificate (RC) itself serves as the fitness certificate for the first 15 years. After 15 years, the owner must renew the registration and get a fitness test done. Once renewed, the fitness certificate is valid for 5 years, after which it must be renewed again.

Commercial Vehicles (Trucks, Cabs, Buses):
Commercial vehicles require regular fitness checks. Under current rules, a new commercial vehicle is issued a fitness certificate valid for 2 years. After 8 years of age, the commercial vehicle must undergo an annual fitness inspection and renewal process.

Renewal Inspection Process:
During inspection, the RTO inspector checks vehicle safety parts, including headlamps, tail lamps, indicators, brakes, tyres, exhaust emission levels, reflector tapes, and general engine body structure.
